As mesmas palavras, as mesmas ações.

Qual é a motivação destas pessoas?

A investigação demora.

A Brazilian journalist, Cristiane Damacena, 25, became famous throughout the country in April 2015. However, the news that made her famous couldn’t be worse. Cristiane was victim of racist cyber attack groups. In fact, dear reader, you shouldn’t expect a reproduction of the images or the words of this kind of crime. I will not do it. My conversation with the journalist is about our profession, about occupying spaces in society and, of course, about racism. Cristiane came under virtual attack again after the impact of the case of Globo Tv Netxwork journalist, Maria Julia Coutinho, also known as Maju. “They try to discredit the image of black women and, at the same time, “promoting themselves” to attract attention,” she explains.

There were many comparisons. Cristiane really looks like the Oscar winning for best supporting actress for the film “12 years of slavery,” Lupita Nyongo’o. The actress, of Kenyan origin, born in Mexico and having lived most of her life in America, was elected, in 2014, the most beautiful woman in the world by People magazine.

Cristiane, our winner, was born in Brasilia, and have always studied in public school. Two years ago she graduated in journalism, and works at the Ministry of Agrarian Development. Her father, an army soldier, and her mother, and a general assistant clerk, have lived in Brasilia for 30 years. They have always tried to prevent their daughters from being victims of prejudice. But this is a difficult mission in Brazil.

You were a victim of any prejudice in your childhood?

Cristiane: When I was a child, my feeling was that people did not like me, and I didn’t know why. After you grow up you begin to understand. It’s not really you. It is because of your color, your lips and your hair. When I got home, my parents talked to me, explaining that  I was beautiful the way I was.

Was your family committed to the fight against racial prejudice?

Cristiane: My father used to attend the meetings of MNU – Unified Black Movement – but he gave it up because of the military dictatorship. For him, as a military man, it was conflicting. And I’ve never been interested in spearheading a militant project. Nevertheless, I’ve been collaborating on poetry evenings and on black women round-table discussions, for example.

How did you receive the news about the acts of bias and discrimination against journalist Maria Julia Coutinho?

Cristiane: I was in the state of Maranhão, on holiday. Checking my cell phone, I saw that it was pretty much the same thing. The same words,  the same actions. And it didn’t come from only one person. There were many. I began to look for a TV to watch the news about it … I was very upset because my case was not the first and will certainly not be the last. Who will be next victim?

What is the motivation of these people?

Cristiane: A black journalist, in this place of power and exposure, bothers many people. A the success of a black woman bothers them more than of a black man. Admitting the success and the victory of a black woman irritates many people because she is a representative of a group.

Were you under attack again?

Cristiane: After the Maju case, a report mentioned my case and they remembered me. They posted negative comments in social media again, and kept saying “I hope my print appears on the Fátima Bernardes program.” They want visibility.

Why?

Cristiane: There are several groups. What they want is to discredit the image of black women and gain notoriety. They simply print and have fun.

After you were attacked, you did not answer. Have you overcome this situation?

Cristiane: At first I felt very bad. I couldn’t give an interview. I felt weak But I’m well now. However, there are days when I fell bad again. Sometimes I’m distracted somewhere and start thinking about who wrote those things, who these people are … The investigation to identify them is a long process. This sensation of impunity is what makes me really upset. They do not trace the messages because they are still waiting for an answer from Facebook.

Difficult to deal with all this…

Cristiane: Yes. When you’re a kid, you first think there is something wrong with you. Later, you discover that there’s something wrong with the world.
