DO cineclick

What’s wrong with Russell?

Do Dailymail

He’s played a brave, upstanding warrior, a moral hero with right on his side. But Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe’s performance was anything but Gladiatorial at the Bafta awards on Sunday night.

Reports of the ceremony have been dominated by Crowe’s fracas with a BBC executive who cut short his acceptance speech for Best Actor in the broadcast version of the event.

Director Malcolm Gerrie was pinned to a wall by the New Zealander, who jabbed him in the chest and shouted: ‘You ***** piece of ****. I’ll make sure you’ll never work in Hollywood.’

That same evening, a fan who took Crowe’s picture received a similar volley of abuse. ‘How dare you take my **** picture,’ he demanded. ‘Who gave you ***** permission.’

It has now emerged that Crowe’s irrational, diva-like behaviour was also on display the previous night when he refused to be interviewed in front of other guests on the Parkinson Show.

Those in close contact with the star won’t have been particularly surprised by his latest outbursts – his tendency to use abusive, aggressive behaviour was in evidence long before these recent incidents came to light.

Crowe himself has admitted that he spends a lot of time ‘telling people to **** off and get out of my life’ but he insists that the media image of him as a wild man is wildly inaccurate.

‘All the National Enquirer stuff, the jabs in the gossip columns, trying to belittle me by associating me with people sexually or whatever – all of that is b*******,’ he says.

He argues that all the media ‘intrusion’, as he sees it, is unwarranted and detracts from his undoubted ability as an actor.

However others believe that his unenviable reputation is at least partly justified.

Geoffrey Wright, director of Romper Stomper, has said: ‘Russell is the rudest actor I’ve ever met.’

‘The tone of an interview with Russell Crowe depends very much on the mood he’s in at the time,’ wrote one commentator recently.

‘His bouts of surliness, his arrogance and his tendency to insult interviewers have gained him a reputation in Hollywood as an actor with “an attitude problem”‘.

In 1988 when Crowe was starring in the musical Blood Brothers in Sydney, he fell out with co-star Peter Cousens who alleged Crowe had tried to punch him in the dressing room.

In 1998, he provoked a fight in Alberta, Canada, after he enraged locals by branding the place ‘boring’. Then, two years ago he was caught on video in a scuffle in a bar near his ranch in Australia where witnesses said he became enraged after two local girls showed no interest.

Around the same time, during a nightclub brawl at Coff’s Harbour in Sydney, Crowe is said to have bitten a chunk out of his victim’s face and spat it back at him, before being dragged to the ground by bouncers.

The pugnacious part of his character is not the only thing to have created controversy for Crowe. His personal life has been the subject of much speculation and he has been linked with at least two high profile Hollywood marriage break-ups.

In 2000, Crowe became romantically involved with Meg Ryan on the set of the film Proof of Life. Shortly afterwards, she announced her ten-year marriage to actor Dennis Quaid was over.

When Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise split up last year, speculation mounted after Crowe consistently provided Kidman with a shoulder to cry on, although he has always insisted that the pair are just ‘best friends’.

Crowe’s record company – he’s in a band called 30 Odd Foot of Grunts – insist Crowe is simply misunderstood. After the Bafta controversy, they released a statement saying: ‘Russell is extremely polite and a good-natured character but then it seems he only relaxes when talking about his music. Russell can be a fiery character but he is deeply emotional.’

It could be that Crowe feels the need to behave in a macho manner because he feels acting isn’t a particularly manly profession.

He is often ostentatious in foregoing wine or champagne in favour of beer – a real man’s drink.

In his Oscar acceptance speech last year, he spoke movingly and admiringly of his grandfather who was a cinematographer during World War II, who often worked under fire and who was awarded the MBE – a tough act to follow.

He is said to be very proud of the fact that his first cousin is the great New Zealand cricketer Martin Crowe – cricket is a proper job for a Kiwi bloke.

So with the Academy Awards just around the corner, can we expect more fireworks from the Crowe corner?

He did storm out of the Golden Globe awards last January when Tom Hanks won Best Actor. And last year he gave Oscars host Steve Martin the coldest of glares after Martin told the audience ‘Ellen Burstyn made herself look 30 pounds heavier and 20 years older for her role and that still didn’t stop Russell Crowe hitting on her’.

The odds are that, win or lose, Crowe will be making the headlines again.
